The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada assists its members with their continuing education by providing financial support for a variety of scientific and educational programs.
The SOGC also offers numerous awards bursaries and grants in recognition of the professional contributions generously offered by its members.
The following Awards, Bursaries and Grants are available for 2010.
The Foundation for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health (FPSRH) and the Canadian Foundation for Women's Health have partnered with the SOGC to offer a wide variety of bursaries and grants available to SOGC members.
Description
The President’s Award is the highest recognition awarded to a member for outstanding contributions and
commitment to women’s health and ongoing support to the specialty and the SOGC. The SOGC would
like to recognize an outstanding physician in Canada for a contribution which best reflects the objectives
of the Society. The individual must be in practice for a number of years and have demonstrated
leadership qualities at the national and/or international level.
Award
This prestigious award is presented during the Annual Clinical Meeting’s Awards Ceremony and
publicized nationally. The recipient’s name appears on a plaque at the SOGC’s National Office. The
recipient will also receive a $1,000 prize. The President of the SOGC puts forward a nomination that is
discussed and approved by SOGC Executive and Council during its winter meeting.
Eligibility
• Member obstetrician/gynaecologist of the SOGC in good standing;
• Present or past committee or Council member;
• Made significant contributions over a consistent period of time to SOGC projects and programs
nationally and/or internationally;
• Actively advocates on behalf of SOGC and for women’s health; and
• Recognized as a leader in their field of either obstetrics, gynaecology or a subspecialty.
Communication Plan
The recipient of this award shall submit a one page biography, an electronic picture as well as a copy of
his or her acceptance speech. In addition to being widely distributed across Canada to medical journals
such as The Medical Post and L’Actualité Médicale, these will be sent to all major national newspapers as
a press release. Particular care will also be directed to highlight this award in the regional newspapers of
the province of the award recipient.
Benefits to the Award Recipient
The award recipient will receive complimentary registration to any regional meetings during a one year
period from June to May. The award recipient will be offered to present at three of the regional meetings
in the coming year (excluding the ICME meeting). He or she will give a talk of his/her choice on an issue
of women’s health. This lecture will be designated “The Presidential Award Lecture”. He or she will
receive a travel and hotel accommodation subsidy reimbursement to present at these three regional
meetings of his/her choice. At the ACM, where the recipient is given the award, the registration fee will be
waived, and two hotel nights and economy travel will be paid.

The President of the SOGC may submit one nomination by February 1 st of each year.
Nomination and Selection
Nomination is by the current SOGC President and is approved at the March Executive and Council
meetings.
Description
The Distinguished Service Award is awarded to members who have served the Society with
distinction throughout the years, whether this would be on Council, Executive and/or various
Committees. This award is exclusive to those who have worked for more than ten to fifteen
years in an exemplary fashion in their practice and collaboratively with the Society.
The SOGC would like to recognize the outstanding contribution made by member
obstetrician/gynaecologists or physicians to our specialty and to Women’s Health.
The Distinguished Service Award is a high recognition awarded by Council for a member’s
outstanding contribution and commitment to Women’s Health, the promotion of the specialty
and service to the SOGC.
Award
This award is presented during the Annual Clinical Meeting’s Awards Ceremony. The recipients
will receive a Distinguished Service Award. This is a nonmonetary
award.
Eligibility
· Member of the SOGC in good standing;
· Committee or Council Member; Ob/Gyn with service to the SOGC and his or her community;
· Made significant contributions over a consistent period of time (ten to fifteen years) to the
SOGC projects and program, nationally or internationally;
· Actively advocates on behalf of the SOGC for Women’s Health; and

The nomination can be submitted by any current Council Member and should be submitted to
the SOGC by February 1 st each year.

The Executive Committee would make a recommendation for final approval by Council at the
March meeting.
Description
Award of merit to an individual whose outstanding achievements reflect the aims and objectives
of the SOGC.
Award
A plaque is awarded at the June Council Dinner. Honorary members are exempted from
membership fees and are entitled to all privileges and benefits of an SOGC member.
Eligibility
• Made significant contributions to women’s health nationally and/or internationally;
• Supports the aims and objectives of the SOGC; and
• Recipient is a nonmember
of the SOGC.
Communication Plan
The recipient of this award shall submit a one page biography and an electronic picture. The
award recipient will be recognized by way of a press release and through the SOGC News.
Benefits to the Award Recipient
The award recipient will receive complimentary registration, and complimentary accommodation
to the Annual Clinical Meeting where he or she receives the Award. Receives lifetime paid
registration to any SOGC CME event.

Nomination and Selection
Honorary members are nominated by the SOGC Executive and Council and approved at their
annual winter meetings.
Description
The Recognition of Service Award is granted to individuals who contribute their time and
expertise to SOGC committees, including Council. This award highlights the importance of
volunteer member involvement in the overall success of the SOGC.
Award
Nonmonetary
awards are granted to recipients.
Eligibility
• SOGC member in good standing; and
• The individual is active in one or more of the categories listed below.
Categories:
• Council: A Recognition of Service Award will be granted annually to outgoing Council
members during the June Council Dinner and recipients will be acknowledged at the Annual
Clinical Meeting (ACM) Awards Ceremony.
• Committee Chairs and CoChairs:

Service Award during the ACM’s Awards Ceremony.
• Committee Members: Outgoing committee members receive a certificate of
acknowledgment and recognition of their service on SOGC committees.

President at the June Council Dinner. The President’s Pin and a crystal gavel will then be
awarded at the ACM’s Awards Ceremony.
Nomination and Selection
Members are automatically recognized for their service to the SOGC according to their
committee involvement.
Description
The SOGC Regional Achievement Award recognizes the excellence of members who volunteer
at the local, regional or provincial levels for women’s health.
Award
An SOGC Regional Achievement Award with a $500 cheque will be awarded to one recipient in
the Central, Atlantic, Western, Ontario and Quebec regions at the Annual Clinical Meeting’s
Awards Ceremony.
Eligibility
• All membership categories of the SOGC;
• Made significant achievements and contributions to the advancement of women’s health in
their community or province through education, practice or community involvement;
• Active member of the community;
• Contributions reflect the goals and objectives of the SOGC; and
• Advocate for the SOGC.
Communication Plan
The award recipients will be acknowledged through a press release and published in the SOGC
News. Particular care will be taken to highlight this award in regional newspapers in the
province of the award recipient.
Benefits to the Award Recipient
The award recipients will receive free registration to the Annual Clinical Meeting where they are
recognized.
Application Deadline
Each Regional Committee may submit one nomination by February 1 st of each year.
Nomination and Selection
Recipients are selected by their respective Regional Committees and approved at the winter
Executive and Council meetings. This award cannot be awarded posthumously.

–Regional Achievement Award, Atlantic
Description
This award recognizes and celebrates the outstanding commitment and excellence of an SOGC
volunteer for the contribution of knowledge, expertise and experience to the International
Women’s Health Program’s many initiatives in low resource settings.
Award
A plaque will be awarded annually at the International Women’s Health Symposium held during
the SOGC’s Annual Clinical Meeting.
Eligibility
• Member in good standing of SOGC (all categories);
• Made significant contributions to international women’s health; and
• Contributed to the SOGC’s International Women’s Health Program projects/committee.
Application Deadline
February 1st of each year.
Nomination and Selection
Nominees will be selected and reviewed by the International Women’s Health Committee, then
proposed for approval to the SOGC Executive Committee.
Description
This award is given to a Junior Member (resident) of the SOGC who participates in the Abstract
Program during the Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM). The winner participates in an exchange
program between the SOGC and the Collège national des gynécologues et obstétriciens
français (CNGOF) by attending the Collège’s annual clinical meeting. This reciprocal award
also allows a French resident to attend the SOGC’s ACM.
Award
The SOGCCNGOF
Junior Member Award consists of a subsidized trip to France to attend the
annual clinical meeting of the Collège national des gynécologues et obstétriciens français. The
SOGC covers economy air travel and provides a stipend of $380 ($200 for taxis and a per diem
of $30/day for 6 days). The CNGOF covers hotel expenses and registration fees.
A first runnerup
and a second runnerup
will also be chosen in case the winner is unable to
attend the CNGOF annual clinical meeting.

• SOGC Junior Member in good standing; and
• Participation in the Abstract Program, paper or poster abstract presentations at the Annual

Description
The Abstract Awards are for the best oral and poster presentations at the SOGC’s Annual
Clinical Meeting (ACM).
Award
Recipients will receive a certificate and a monetary award. The amount allocated ranges from
$750 to $1,500 depending on the category.

Journalism Award for Excellence in
Women’s Health Reporting
Description
This award, presented by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC)
and the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health (CFWH), recognizes outstanding reporting
on women’s sexual and reproductive health issues in consumer newspapers, magazines, and
broadcasts across Canada. The Journalism Award highlights journalism’s valuable service,
enabling women to make informed health and lifestyle choices with balanced, accurate, timely,
responsible, and insightful communication.
Award
The award consists of $1,000 and a plaque to be presented to winners in two separate media
categories – print and broadcast. The awards are presented during the Annual Clinical Meeting
Awards Ceremony (June).
Eligibility
· The article must address a woman’s health topic or issue;
· The article must have appeared in a Canadian consumer newspaper, magazine, or
broadcast report between January 1 st and December 31 st of the previous year. Trade pieces
are not accepted;
· Broadcast submissions (television or radio) should be documentary style and at least 5
minutes in duration; and
· Print submissions (newspaper, general interest magazine, or online news) should be feature
style and at least 1,500 words in length.

SOGC International Development Grant for Volunteers
Description
The purpose of this grant is to assist SOGC obstetrician/gynaecologist members who wish to pursue
volunteer obstetric and/or gynaecology clinical work in developing countries. The volunteer work
should consist of an active and practical experience related to clearly defined medical and/or health
related community objectives in a developing country. Additional support (in the form of small
honorariums and/or per diems) is permissible with application of this grant.
Grant
The recipient will be provided $3,750 for a sixmonth
term to a maximum of $15,000 for a twoyear
continuous term (prorated depending on the length of the assignment). The grant is provided to
assist with travel and accommodation expenses during the stay outside Canada. Grant recipients
will be recognized at the Annual Clinical Meeting’s Awards Ceremony.
Time and location of tenure
The volunteer work is to be accomplished in a clinical setting in a developing country, starting within
the year following the date that the grant was awarded.
Eligibility
• Canadian obstetrician/gynaecologist members of SOGC in good standing;
• Work on a volunteer basis in a developing country hospital, institution or nongovernmental
organization;
• The volunteer work may be undertaken continuously or in blocks of six months for a maximum of a
24month
consecutive period; and
• Applicants must indicate if they are receiving additional subsidies or grants for the intended
project.
Note: The grant is not intended for continued professional development learning activities, nor is it to
be used to supplement an exchange program within which the physician receives a Canadian salary.
Students and residents are not eligible.

Selection
Submissions are evaluated by the International Women’s Health Committee on the overall merit of
the traineeship and the benefits to the physician and the host community. Evaluation criteria: The
health situation and needs of the institution or region the physician will be involved in, the benefits to
the individual and the host community, clearly stated and measurable objectives and the quality of
the proposed activities. Submissions are then proposed for approval to the SOGC Executive
Committee.
Fellowship adjudication
Payment will be issued in two installments, the first one upon grant approval and the second upon
receipt of the final report, which is a detailed account of the volunteer work.
Description
This bursary is designed to address the wide spread need of clinicians to have an opportunity to
develop a Structured Learning Project to meet the requirements to claim credits under section 4 of
the Royal College CPD categories.
The Royal College description of such a project is:
“Structured learning projects are learning activities planned and developed individually or
in collaboration with other members of a group or community to address a question, issue
or need relevant to professional practice. Each individual is responsible for identifying and
recording the outcome or impact on practice for each project.”
This specific bursary applies to the “traineeship” which is defined as follows:
These are structured learning activities planned in collaboration with a mentor or supervisor to meet
a defined need. The trainee defines the learning objectives to be accomplished, describes the
learning activities to meet these objectives and documents the outcomes achieved for practice.
Funding is provided by the Foundation for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health
(FPSRH) whose mission is to promote and support educational initiatives in the field of sexual and
reproductive health.
Bursary
This bursary ranges between $3,000 and $5,000. A portion of the bursary may be given to the
mentor. Up to 5 bursaries per year may be available to be granted.
Time and location of tenure
The traineeship is to be accomplished over a 6 month period and should allow time to set up,
experience and write up the results to claim credits.
Eligibility
To organize a structured learning project the clinician must identify the clinical challenge (this may
be a lack of knowledge or the need to develop a skill) and the process for addressing this challenge.
The process will often involve the identification of a mentor and the preparation of a program which
involves interaction between the mentee and mentor. It requires a commitment of time, and possibly
of travel, on the part of both participants to carry out the program. Communitybased
physicians and
Universitybased
physicians are eligible. The applicants must be obstetrician/gynaecologist
members of the SOGC in good standing and the applicants receiving additional subsidies or grants
for the intended project are to declare these in their application.

physicians. The bursary recipient shall submit a onepage

The purpose of this bursary is to provide financial support to nurses or midwives to enable them to
meet specific learning needs and those of their community. This clinical professional development
opportunity may involve, but is not restricted to, the acquisition of technical knowledge or skills in the
areas of obstetrics/gynaecology and/or sexual and reproductive health. The traineeship consists of
an active, individualized, and practical experience related to clearly defined educational objectives.
Funding is provided by the Foundation for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health
(FPSRH) whose mission is to promote and support educational initiatives in the field of sexual and
reproductive health.
Bursary
This bursary consists of $3,000 for the nurse or midwife. In addition, $1,000 will be awarded to the
host institution providing the traineeship to help cover expenses. Recipients will be recognized at
the Annual Clinical Meeting Awards Ceremony (June). Payment will be issued in two installments,
the first upon bursary announcement and the second upon receipt of the final report, which is a
detailed account of the traineeship.
Time and location of tenure
The traineeship is to be provided in Canada. The Award Committee may consider an alternate
location if the training sought is not available in Canada. The traineeship must take place during the
18 months following the date that the bursary was awarded.
Eligibility
• Applicant must be a nurse or midwife SOGC member in good standing;
• Applicants must indicate if they are receiving additional subsidies for the intended traineeship; and• The learning activity or clinical update is to be of a duration of no more than 8 weeks.

Resident Elective Grant International Women’s Health
Description
The purpose of this grant is to assist residents wishing to pursue elective training in international
women’s health. The general objectives are to allow interested residents to develop a better
understanding of women’s health issues and the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology in a
developing country, and the appreciation for the work conducted by fellow health professionals in
those countries. The elective should provide the recipient of the grant with an active, individualized
and practical experience in a developing country related to clearly defined education objectives.
Funding is provided by the Foundation for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health whose
mission is to promote and support educational initiatives in the field of sexual and reproductive
health.
Grant
The grant consists of $4,000 for the resident. In addition, $1,000 will be awarded to the host
institution providing the traineeship to help cover expenses. Grant recipients will be recognized at
the Annual Clinical Meeting Awards Ceremony (June).
Time and location of tenure
The elective must be spent in a clinical setting in a developing country.
Eligibility
• Applicant must be a Junior Member of the SOGC in good standing;
• Applicant must be enrolled in a residency training program in Canada; and
• The learning activity is to take the form of a short period (4 weeks minimum) of clinical update.
Application Deadline

International Women’s Health
Description
The Resident Elective Grants are intended to assist residents in pursuing elective training in
obstetrics and gynaecology during their residency programs.
Grant
Consists of a number of grants ranging from $2,500 to $3,000. These are awarded to the top
elective proposals to help cover expenses incurred while participating in an elective program. A final
report (with summary of expenses) is required within three months of the completion of the program
to receive the final portion of the grant. Grant recipients will be recognized at the Annual Clinical
Meeting Awards Ceremony (June).
Time and location of tenure
The traineeship must be spent in a clinical setting in Canada within one year following the date that
the grant was awarded.
Eligibility
• Applicant must be a Junior Member of the SOGC in good standing;
• Applicant must be enrolled in a residency training program in Canada;
• Elective training must be held in Canada, unless the chosen program is not available in Canada; and

Definitions:
Awards
Awards handed out by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada are based on nominations and recognition. Aside from the Journalism Awards and the Abstract Awards, most do not include a monetary reward and do not require submissions of proposals.
Bursaries
A bursary handed out by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada is defined as a monetary award that is given to an applicant submitting a proposal to assist in their professional development. The purpose of this bursary is to encourage exposure to new fields for these eligible candidates. The suitable candidates for such bursaries (physicians, nurses and midwives and ob/gyn residents) are encouraged to apply.
Grants
A grant handed out by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada is defined as a monetary reward that is given to an applicant, such as an ob/gyn resident, who is submitting a proposal to successfully complete an elective training and who is in need of financial assistance to do so.
General Guidelines:
Submissions Nominations and applications are to be submitted to the SOGC's National Office. Eligible applications must be duly completed and must meet all listed criteria.
Deadline
Applications must be postmarked no later than the deadline indicated for each award, bursary, or grant. Entries received past the deadline will not be considered.
Judging
Each member of the selection committee shall be given an opportunity to review and rank the applications and to approve or decline the award, bursary, or grant according to preestablished selection criteria.

Presentation
The presentation shall be at the Awards Ceremony of the SOGC's Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM) unless otherwise specified.
Recipient Information
A summary of the recipient's biography, a photograph, and a brief description of the project or achievement may be requested for communication purposes. The SOGC reserves the right to publish a recipient's name, occupation, picture, and description of project/accomplishments.
Disclosure
Applicants receiving additional subsidies or grants for the intended project are to declare these in their application.
Waiting Period
Previous awardees can reapply for the same award after a threeyear waiting period. Unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to update their application and resubmit for consideration the following year.
