Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada Honours Quebec Doctors
Quebec, Quebec – June 20, 2005 – The Council of the Society of Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) proudly presented two of its members with special
awards last Saturday, in recognition of their longterm
contributions to the field.
The SOGC, an organization which represents over 2700 health care providers, presented
the awards to Drs. Antonin Rochette and Cajetan Gauthier on June 18, 2005, as part of
their Annual Clinical Meeting in Quebec City. Both of the doctors were honoured for their
excellence in the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology and for their extensive volunteer
work within the organization.
Doctor Rochette, an active member of the association in Quebec, was lauded for his
many years promoting the organization and the ob/gyn specialty throughout the province.
He has represented Quebec members on the SOGC Administrative Council, served as
the SOGC treasurer, and is also an active member and former president of the
Association des Obstétriciens et Gynécoloques du Québec (AOGQ). In addition to his
work within the organizations, he was also instrumental in the opening of a new
Obstetrics and Gynecology unit at the Hôpital St-Ambroise
de Lorretteville, where he
worked for four years as the unit’s sole specialist.
“Organizations such as the SOGC exist because of the contributions of doctors like
Antonin Rochette,” said outgoing SOGC President Dr. Gerald Stanimir, who presented
Dr. Rochette with the President’s Award. “He is appreciated by our membership as a
champion of both the SOGC and the rights of women.”
Dr. Gauthier, the other recipient of the award, was chosen because of his nearly 30years
experience as a mentor and practitioner at L’Hotel Dieu de Levis in Quebec. Like Dr.
Rochette, Dr. Gauthier has been an ardent supporter of the SOGC in the province of
Quebec, promoting membership and collaboration across the specialty. In addition, Dr.
Gauthier also held the position of SOGC regional chairperson for the province of Quebec
from 1993 to 1997, and has served on numerous committees and councils with the
SOGC over his long and distinguished career.
“He has helped to promote the specialty (of ob/gyn) and enrich the lives of both patients
and colleagues alike,” said Dr. Stanimir. “Our society is in debt for his enthusiasm,
dedication and camaraderie.”
