Dr. Nicolette Camilla Caccia MD
Dr Caccia has been a pediatric and adolescent gynecologist at the Hospital for Sick Children for more than 15 years and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Toronto and an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) - Obstetrics & Gynecology McMaster University and Queens University.
She has been heavily influenced by the “Toronto” way of practicing medicine having completed an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry& Microbiology and graduate research in Molecular Immunology followed by obtaining her undergraduate and postgraduate medical training at the University of Toronto. Unwilling to leave, she immediately joined the staff at Sick Kids, but balanced this by also practicing for five years in Bowmanville, where she developed her interests in medical education, collaborative care and a deep dedication to evidence based practice. When the obstetrical department in Bowmanville was absorbed by Lakeridge Health-Oshawa, she returned to Toronto to continue her practice of paediatric & adolescent gynecology at Sick Kids and establish a practice at Humber River Hospital. To this crowded schedule, she added part-time studies towards a Masters of Education at OISE with research interests in inter-professional education and the drivers of healthcare practice. She completed her Masters in 2007 and has continued her interest in these topics and expanded her interests to include patient safety, e-learning and teaching and assessment of the implicit CanMEDs competencies and more recently competency based medical education (CBME). She is involved in teaching not only medical students and residents, but midwifery, physician assistant and nursing students.
She has found the developmental and psychosocial aspects of delivery of gynecological care to children and adolescents to be one of the most rewarding areas of her practice, and feels that this exposure to the gynecological problems in the early years adds an important dimension to her approach the her adult patients.
Dr. Caccia’s gynecological focus is rooted in the adolescent population but over the years has expanded to encompass women throughout their reproductive years, with a special interest in medical and non-invasive treatments.
Her current hobby, which consumes much of her waking life, is the implementation of competency-based medical education (CBME) in Canadian postgraduate training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
