This bursary is designed to address the wide spread need of clinicians to have an opportunity to
develop a Structured Learning Project to meet the requirements to claim credits under section 4 of
the Royal College CPD categories.
The Royal College description of such a project is:
“Structured learning projects are learning activities planned and developed individually or
in collaboration with other members of a group or community to address a question, issue
or need relevant to professional practice. Each individual is responsible for identifying and
recording the outcome or impact on practice for each project.”
This specific bursary applies to the “traineeship” which is defined as follows:
These are structured learning activities planned in collaboration with a mentor or supervisor to meet
a defined need. The trainee defines the learning objectives to be accomplished, describes the
learning activities to meet these objectives and documents the outcomes achieved for practice.
Funding is provided by the Foundation for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health
(FPSRH) whose mission is to promote and support educational initiatives in the field of sexual and
reproductive health. Bursary
This bursary ranges between $3,000 and $5,000. A portion of the bursary may be given to the
mentor. Up to 5 bursaries per year may be available to be granted. Time and location of tenure
The traineeship is to be accomplished over a 6 month period and should allow time to set up,
experience and write up the results to claim credits.
Eligibility
To organize a structured learning project the clinician must identify the clinical challenge (this may
be a lack of knowledge or the need to develop a skill) and the process for addressing this challenge.
The process will often involve the identification of a mentor and the preparation of a program which
involves interaction between the mentee and mentor. It requires a commitment of time, and possibly
of travel, on the part of both participants to carry out the program. Communitybased
physicians and
Universitybased
physicians are eligible. The applicants must be obstetrician/gynaecologist
members of the SOGC in good standing and the applicants receiving additional subsidies or grants
for the intended project are to declare these in their application. Communication Plan
The promotion of this bursary will be executed in collaboration with APOG to Communitybased
physicians and Universitybased
physicians. The bursary recipient shall submit a onepage
biography and an electronic photograph. A photo and mention of the award will be included in the
SOGC News (the Society’s newsletter). Application Deadline
Submissions are to be received by the SOGC at any time. Complete the attached application form.
Selection
The selection committee is the SOGC Executive Committee. Submissions are evaluated on the
overall merit of the traineeship and the benefits to the physician and their community.
