HL: SOGC President Dr. Nicolas Leyland Discusses New Study on Hormonal Contraception

In a Global News story published this week, SOGC President Dr. Nicholas Leyland stresses that a new study linking hormonal contraceptives with a risk of meningioma should not deter women from using contraception.

The risk, he notes, is rare. Meanwhile, the benefits of hormonal contraception outweigh the risks for most women. These medications are important options for birth control and for treating painful conditions like endometriosis and abnormal uterine bleeding, he said.

“To put it in perspective, the chance of dying while driving on our roads is about one in 20,000. But that doesn’t stop us from getting into our car and driving around. That’s what we call an acceptable risk because it’s extremely rare,” Dr. Leyland said.
