OTTAWA, ON: In light of the recent change in the United States’ recommendation on COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) affirms its continued support for COVID-19 vaccination as a safe and strongly recommended measure during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In an age of growing misinformation and disinformation, the SOGC strongly urges that vaccine decisions, including during pregnancy, be guided by evidence-based science and clinical expertise.
Pregnant women who contract COVID-19 are more likely to end up in the hospital, need intensive care or require a ventilator compared to other women of the same age who are not pregnant. Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine helps lower the chances of serious complications for pregnant women, including intensive care admission, the need for a ventilator, preterm birth and death.
Women and health care providers should continue to rely on trusted science-based organizations like the SOGC for current and accurate guidance on vaccination during pregnancy. The SOGC continues to recommend COVID-19 vaccination in any trimester as part of routine prenatal care.
