Ottawa, November 2, 2021 – Each year The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) and the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health (CFWH) are pleased to recognize and award an outstanding Canadian journalist for excellence in reporting on women’s health. The award acknowledges a journalist whose work has contributed a valuable public health service in broadcasting or print media in Canada.

The winner of the 2021 SOGC/CFWH Journalism Awards for Excellence in Women’s’ Health reporting is Su-Ling Goh from Global News (Edmonton) for her broadcast piece Should Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women get the COVID-19 Vaccine?, which tackles the topic of vaccine hesitancy amongst pregnant and breastfeeding individuals.

“This news report helps to combat the online spread of misinformation and disinformation against COVID-19 vaccines safety,” says Dr. Jennifer Blake, CEO of the SOGC. “In Canada, there is a substantial group of people who are confident in the vaccine and are willing and eager to get it. However, there are still people who need to be convinced. And this news story presents a strong case for vaccination and has likely given some pregnant individuals the information they needed to convince them to get the jab. It’s a win.”

“Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding are at increased risk for severe illness with COVID-19, and unfortunately some of them are hesitant to get vaccinated.
