Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society, Healthcare Excellence Canada’s
Enhanced Recovery Canada™, the toolkit includes a Canadian clinical pathway with physician order templates and data collection resources as well as complementary patient resources. Designed to improve the patient’s experience and outcomes, the new pathway and resources will help reduce complications and support shorter hospital stays and safer transitions after surgery.
Based on
ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) guidelines, the clinical pathway modifies the patient’s stress response during surgery and changes traditional care before, during and after the procedure. The pathway is designed to help patients having cesarean deliveries feel better and recover faster and puts the quadruple aim well within reach – improving patient outcomes and patient experience, supporting the clinician experience, and lowering costs.
Enhanced Recovery Canada promotes engaging the full care team, so they are knowledgeable about each other’s roles and where they intersect. They also emphasize the importance of including patients, families and care partners from the time surgery is being planned to understanding the important role they play in care when leaving the hospital. Putting the full Enhanced Recovery Canada clinical and patient bundle into practice is the key to its success.
The full package of resources for cesarean deliveries includes a clinical pathway with physician order sets and data collection resources, a patient guide, digital booklet and animation, as well as a patient safety implementation guide. Enhanced Recovery Canada pathways and resources for gynaecological, colorectal, and orthopaedic hip and knee same-day or in hospital replacement surgeries are also available.
