About Dr. Nirmala Chandrasekaran:

Dr. Chandrasekaran is a Maternal–Fetal Medicine specialist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto. She is a Staff Perinatologist at St. Michael’s Hospital, where she serves as Lead for Obstetrical Ultrasound, Lead for Obstetrics Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, and MFM Lead for the Perinatal Addictions Clinic. She holds multiple fellowships from the Royal Colleges in the UK and Canada and has received international distinctions. Her clinical and research interests include high-risk pregnancy, obstetric ultrasound, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, perinatal addictions, patient safety, and quality improvement.

About Janet Christie:

Janet is a Certified Addiction Recovery Coach, speaker, and facilitator with over 30 years of personal recovery from multiple addictions. She helps women heal from the pain and stigma of addiction by challenging stereotypes and shifting societal paradigms. Janet has been instrumental in developing the FASD Key Worker Program in BC and the Moms Mentoring Moms initiative, supporting women in recovery and families affected by FASD. Her story has been widely published as an inspiring example of resilience and hope.

She is an author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers including papers related to substance use and pregnancy/breastfeeding. Her clinical, teaching and research interests include medical education, maternal/child health and populations experiencing health inequities.

About Barbara Smith 

Barbara Smith  holds a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Victoria and a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Leadership. She is a social worker, educator, and systems-level leader with extensive experience in addiction, recovery, smoking cessation, and community-based program development. Barbara founded and led Prostitutes Education, Empowerment and Recovery Society (PEERS), supporting individuals and families impacted by addiction, trauma, sex work. Her work included extensive engagement with pregnant and parenting women who continued to use substances and smoke, with a focus on wellbeing and recovery pathways.

About Lindsay Wolfson

Lindsay Wolfson, MPH, is a women's health researcher, consultant, and advocate. She holds a Master of Public Health in Social Inequities and Health from Simon Fraser University. Lindsay is currently the manager at a women's health research and knowledge exchange centre, where she focuses on research and collaboration related to perinatal substance use, chronic pain, violence prevention, sexual health, and community health. Lindsay was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2021 after a decade of living with chronic pain.

About Dr. Al-Arnawoot

Dr. Basma Al-Arnawoot is a staff radiologist at Hamilton General Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Radiology at McMaster University. She completed her residency training at McMaster University, followed by a fellowship in Women’s Imaging at the University of Toronto.

With specialized training and expertise in Body and Breast Imaging, Dr. Al-Arnawoot has a particular focus on advanced imaging and the diagnosis of benign complex gynecological conditions. She serves as the Chair of the Endometriosis Working Group at the Canadian Association of Radiology, a Board Member of the Canadian Society of Abdominal Radiology (CSAR) Executive Committee, and the Body MRI Lead at Hamilton General Hospital.

Dr. Al-Arnawoot is an active peer reviewer for several national and international medical journals, including CARJ, RadioGraphics, Reproduction and Fertility Journal, and JMIRO. Her research interests center on imaging of benign complex gynecological diseases and advancements in medical education.

About Dr. Leonardi

Dr. Mathew Leonardi is an expert in complex gynecology, endometriosis excision surgery and gynaecological ultrasound (assistant professor) at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Canada. He is an honorary adjunct lecturer at the University of Adelaide. His philosophy of care includes working in an interdisciplinary team and patient-centred decision making. He has been awarded his PhD from the University of Sydney which is focused on the utility of ultrasound in the diagnosis and surgical management of endometriosis.

Dr. Leonardi is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in his field. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, several textbook chapters, and presented at numerous international congresses on endometriosis. He has received numerous awards for his conference presentations on endometriosis. He is an avid researcher, actively contributing academically to the advancement of gynecologic health.

Dr. Leonardi is on the World Endometriosis Society Early Career Board and a founding member of the Next Generation Committee at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is an Associate Editor for Reproduction & Fertility and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada. He is part of an international research group named Imagendo, which won the most prestigious science award in Australia, the 2023 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology.

About Dr. Cook

Dr. Jocelynn Cook is the Chief Scientific Officer for the SOGC. She has a PhD in Reproductive Physiology from the Medical University of South Carolina. She oversees all work related to Continuing Medical Education, Clinical Practice Guidelines, Research, Accreditation, Global Health and Indigenous Health. Her professional career has focused on issues related to maternal-fetal medicine including substance abuse during pregnancy, preterm birth and maternal mortality.

About Dr. Schofield

Dr. Steve Schofield has worked with the Canadian military for more than 20 years. His focus is communicable disease control and prevention. In this role, he advises on how to protect deploying troops including through use of vaccines and countermeasures to prevent insect bites. Steve has been allowed to play with people way smarter than him, including for some 20 years with the Canadian Committee to Advise in Tropical Medicine and Travel (CATMAT), and has spent shorter stints on working groups for the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization and the Unites States Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. In a past life, he obtained a PhD from Imperial College which involved chasing things like tsetse flies in Zimbabwean national parks. He still sometimes chases insects and their ilk, including on his rural property, where he practices what he preaches to avoid being bitten by the Borrelia-infected ticks that have moved in over the last few years.

About Dr. Elwood

Dr. Chelsea Elwood completed her B.M.Sc. and M.Sc. in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Western Ontario completed her medical training at the University of British Columbia including a fellowship in Reproductive Infectious Disease. She has a varied clinical practice including being the Medical Director of the Oak Tree clinic and the antimicrobial stewardship program at BCWH which focus on infections as they related to women’s health and reproduction. She has authored numerous guidelines and lead provincial and national responses in those areas.

Free access to prescription contraceptives in BC: The journey to make this happen, with Dr. Wendy Norman

British Columbia took a first step in providing free contraception to women, which would cover oral hormone pills, contraceptive injections, hormonal, and copper intrauterine devices. BC will be investing $119 M over the next three years for it’s new Free Contraception Program, which is great news for women. It took 10 years for this decision, and this was all thanks to efforts made by dedicated people such as Dr. Wendy Norman.

Norman, MD, CCFP, FCFP, DTM&H, MHSc, is a Professor in the Department of Family Practice, and an Associate Member in both the School of Population and Public Health, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

In 2021, Dr. Norman received the SOGC Mentorship award and was named a "Woman of Impact" by the Canadian Government.

About  Dr.  Amanda Black

Dr. Black is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ottawa.  She works at the Ottawa Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.  She completed medical training at the University of Western Ontario, University of Ottawa, and Queen’s University and holds a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She is an Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and is the Dr. Elaine Jolly Chair in Women’s Health Research.

Dr. Black has taken on many roles at the local, provincial, and national level including leadership roles within the SOGC where she is a member of the SOGC Board of Directors. She chaired the National Contraception Awareness Program for 10 years and is current Chair of the SOGC’s Sexual Health and Reproductive Equity (SHARE) Committee. Dr. Black has authored many national guidelines, and has published in the areas of pediatric gynecology, contraception, and obstetrics. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her clinical expertise, providing expertise to the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada, and Statistics Canada, and has represented Canada at both the CDC and WHO in the development of the Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraception.

This ranges from meth-induced psychosis during labour to the decompensation of alcoholic cirrhosis in the menopausal period and all of the complex mood-related stops along the way. Her practice incorporates shared care with midwifery and mobile obstetrics, bringing prenatal care to women in shelter, isolation and homeless encampments. This model of care is a work in progress and future area of research.

About  Dr. Anne Berndl

Dr. Anne Berndl is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, as well as an associate Scientist with the Sunnybrook Research Institute. She is the lead author of the SOGC guideline “Labour, Delivery and Postpartum care for people with Physical Disabilities” and is the Chair of the Women’s Health Guideline for the Spina Bifida Association.  She is the director of the Accessible Care Pregnancy clinic at Sunnybrook, which provides antenatal care for people with physical disabilities.

About Dr. Maggie Morris

Dr. Maggie Morris is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. She received her Master of Education in 2010; and she served as APOG president from 2010-2012. Dr. Morris is currently Professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Manitoba, Women’s Health Program. She completed her term as Department Head of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences from 2006 to 2017. She was the first woman to hold the Department Head position since 1964. She leads the Women’s health curriculum for undergraduate medical education and the Women’s Health Curriculum for the Physician Assistant Program at the University of Manitoba.

About Dr. Jennifer Blake

Dr. Jennifer Blake, is the CEO of the SOGC. Dr. Blake has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo, and from McMaster University a medical degree and a Master’s in health research methodology. She brought a national perspective to her work from her experience with the SOGC, the Medical Council of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Association of Academic Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada, and the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health. After eight years at the head of the organization, Dr. Blake announced last summer that she was leaving the organization at the end of the year.

About Dr. Michelle Jacobson

Dr. Jacobson is a general OBGYN and menopause specialist at Women's College and Mount Sinai Hospitals in Toronto. She is an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at u of t and has a masters of health science in knowledge translation.  She has a special interest in women who are prematurely menopausal due to cancer therapies and women with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes. She directs the familial ovarian cancer program at Women's College Hospital.


HPV Prevention Week

In this episode, our host Dr. Graeme Smith talks to Dr. Nancy Durand about HPV — the shorthand usually used for the human papillomavirus. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. In fact, most people who have sex will get HPV at some point in their lives, though many don’t experience symptoms.

Dr. Durand is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto. She received her medical degree and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from McGill University. She is on staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her clinical practice focuses on HPV and colposcopy. She teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and speaks nationally and internationally about Human Papilloma Virus and HPV vaccination

About Dr. Lisa Graves

Lisa Graves is a family physician and graduate of the University of Ottawa. She completed her residency in family medicine and enhanced skills training in maternal and child health at McGill University. She maintains an active practice including addictions with a special interest in women, substance use and pregnancy in Northern Ontario. She is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed papers including papers related to substance use and pregnancy/breastfeeding. Her clinical, teaching and research interests include medical education, maternal/child health and vulnerable populations. She is currently the Associate Dean Faculty Affairs at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine in Kalamazoo Michigan and professor of Family and Community Medicine.


CMV in Pregnancy

In this episode, our host Dr. Graeme Smith talks to Dr. Isabelle Boucoiran about cytomegalovirus (CMV) in pregnancy. CMV is a common virus that rarely causes problems in healthy people. However, a pregnant individual infected with CMV can pass it to their developing baby. This is called congenital CMV, and it can cause birth defects and other health problems.

About Dr. Isabelle Boucoiran

Dr. Isabelle Boucoiran is Clinical Associate Professor at Université de Montréal (UdeM). She graduated at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis (France) in 2010. After a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at UdeM and a fellowship in reproductive infectious diseases at the University of British-Columbia, she joined the Public Health School of UdeM and the obstetrics and gynecology department of the CHU Sainte-Justine where she is co-director of the Women and children Infectious Disease Centre, a provincial referral centre for congenital infections. She is a member of the SOGC infectious diseases committee. Her main research interests are infectious diseases in obstetrics-gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.
