Pregnancy Management for Fetal Neural Tube Defects

Pregnancy Management for Fetal Neural Tube Defects
Neural tube defects result from the failed closure of the human neural tube, which normally occurs during the third to fourth week of embryonic development. In 2015, the rate of non-chromosomal neural tube defects ranged from 3.6-4.6 per 10,000 Canadian births. This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the prevention of fetal neural tube defects. Furthermore, the guideline outlines screening and diagnosis procedures, along with recommendations to counsel families on treatment options. After reviewing the guideline, SOGC members may complete the Guideline Resource Kit which includes an online quiz that will contribute towards continuing medical education credits, and download resources such as a reminder sheet for folic acid supplementation to prevent fetal neural tube defects.
